Update - The problem is not solved yet. Since making those changes a couple of days ago the wifi signal level has been variable and sometimes very poor. Right now I am using inSSIDer to read the signal level reported by the Dell 1506 wifi card: The card is getting a signal level of -80 dBm, whereas a different laptop sitting on the same desk in the same room reports a signal level of -60 dBm. So it seems to me like the Dell 1506 wifi card just has very poor reception. I don't know if that's just intrinsic to that model, or if the unit is defective. But my guess is that almost any replacement card would probably give me a better internet connection. Any suggestions?
